The term "syndrome" usually refers to several different features, which include signs and symptoms, different phenomena and characteristics of the patient, discovered by himself or by the physician. The word "syndrome" means "running together" and refers to the fact that several features usually occur together. Sometimes the same name is given to different combination of symptoms and signs, which are referred to as the same syndrome. The name of the syndrome is sometimes given according to the doctor who discovered it or according to a specific symptom among several symptoms and signs of the syndrome.

There are different kinds of syndromes, such as chronic and neuropathic pain syndromes. Chronic pain syndromes usually refer to the nature of disorder - persistent and lasting condition of pain with clearly recognizable symptoms. Neuropathic pain syndromes refer to injuries to the nerves, rather than injuries to body parts. These syndromes are cured with the use of specific therapy techniques. Chronic pain syndromes may be improved or cured by different pain-killing medicines. Neuropathic pain syndromes are cured by specific treatment of nervous system, for instance, treatment of peripheral nerve disorder.

Another kind of syndrome is the perception of sensation in body parts, such as leg or arm, after the part was removed. This syndrome, widely referred to as the Phantom Limb syndrome or Phantom Limb Pain, has a nature of illusion, which is often treated by spinal cord stimulations, acupuncture or hypnosis.

With today's' medicine, not all the syndromes can be cured; however, many can be improved and treated more or less effectively by different kinds of medical techniques.
